“Every time we put our focus on one suspect, another lead would take us down another path. It was a jumble of snakes. ”That’s how DCI Hector Morgan (Harry Lloyd) sums up his investigation into the death of Jack Wright in the show’s fourth episode. And he’s not wrong. We are past the midway point, but there are still many, many suspects, and who looks the most guilty changes from one minute to the next.

But here’s what we do know: Jack Wright had so much money. Jack Wright was also not a kind man. He blatantly cheated on his first wife. His older children resent him. We also know his death was made to look like a suicide, but it was murder.

Jack changed his will just months before his death. Everyone claims they didn’t know he had dramatically altered his will, but that is proven to be categorically untrue. He didn’t leave anything to his third wife and their son Josh. Jack also gave just a token amount to his two oldest sons. To add insult to injury, the new will kicks his son John out of his leadership role in his company. Instead, it said he wanted his granddaughter Emily to be in charge. John and his brother Gray are contesting the will, both the money they were not left and the executive position that was taken from John.

Let’s take a look at where all the suspects stand in episode four.

Rose Wright: The First Wife

Rose decides she wants to use the money she inherited from Jack, not for her cancer treatment, but to help Cheryl, the young patient she met in chemotherapy in last week’s episode. Bobby is not a fan of this plan. One problem is that Rose’s inheritance might not come in for months. Rose decides to get a loan from her bank and use the money she stands to inherit as collateral. This understandably concerns Bobby, who knows Rose won’t even be able to repay the loan if her inheritance is reduced because of all this legal brouhaha.

Bobby would rather Rose try to save herself, but he loves her and wants to support her. He proposes to Rose, and she accepts. “I can’t think of anything I would like more,” she tells him. Rose continues to appear to be very innocent. But maybe she’s too innocent. Is sacrificing her life for Cheryl a way for her to atone for what she has done?

Gray Wright: The Eldest Boy

Sing it with me now: Gray is lookin’ for money in all the wrong places. Lookin’ for money in too many faces. The man cannot take no for an answer. He pays back his girlfriend Bella the £10,000 he stole from her. Somehow, he thinks that will make everything better, but Bella has finally reached the “when people show you who they are, believe them” stage of their relationship. “I’ve been bailing you out financially and emotionally for years,” she tells him before walking out the door.

Gray also goes to see Emily and begs her for money. “I think they are going to kill me this time,” he tells his daughter. Emily is unmoved and tells him she knows he told the police about Reuben. “Christ, I hope they do beat you to a pulp,” she tells her dad after slapping him. (How much therapy is Emily going to need?!?)

Meanwhile, John and Gray meet with the lawyer about their lawsuit, and the lawyer asks for an idea of what Gray might say to the court. Gray says he will talk about “how much of a cunt my dad was... Never showed me a shred of affection.” The lawyer was looking for his thoughts on how much money he felt entitled to, but declares his rage statement to be “powerful.”

Gray’s other big problem is that Mary, Jack’s house manager, lied to the police when she initially talked to them. She told the police Gray was estranged from his father and hadn’t seen him for five years. But, based on triangulating Gray’s phone, they know he was at his father’s estate five days before Jack died. He tells DCI Morgan that his father slapped him like he had when Gray was a kid. The estate manager also spotted him trying to unlock a gun from his father’s cabinet. He was not successful. But why did Gray want a weapon?

Always a winner, that Gray, he leaves Rose a voicemail saying, “If they do kill me, Mom, it will have been your fault.” And then Gray, last seen going into a building with the loan shark whom he owes £50,000 to, sends Bella a one-word text message: “Help.”

Emily Wright: The Granddaughter

Emily slapping Gray makes it clear to the still-visiting fiancé Kyle that all is not right in Emily’s world. Further clues include that DCI Morgan comes to Emily’s hotel room and says to Kyle, “You’re not Reuben.” Kyle snoops on Emily’s phone in the middle of the night while she is sleeping. We don’t see what’s on Emily’s phone, but Kyle only has one question for his soon-to-be former fiancée when she wakes up.

“Did you kill your grandfather?” he asks her. She knows Kyle has forwarded the messages to his phone, and Emily begs him to delete them. “If you did nothing wrong, what is there to worry about?” he tells her.

“I wish you luck, baby, I think you are going to need it,” he says to her before leaving.

Reuben: The Granddaughter's Boytoy

Reuben continues to do everything possible to make it look like he’s guilty. This week that means paying people to be his alibi. He gives one guy a wad of cash to say Reuben was at his house playing Xbox until at least 2 a.m.

When DCI Morgan goes to the autobody shop where Reuben works, his co-worker Aron says that he doesn’t know when Reuben will be back and has never seen Jack. But the minute Hector leaves, Aron calls Reuben to let him know the police were just there asking about Emily’s grandfather.

“I’m angry at myself for starting everything and not stopping it,” Emily tells Reuben. All evidence is pointing to the fact that Reuben and Emily were in cahoots about something, but exactly what remains a mystery.

Sally Wright: The Current Wife

Sally was so relieved at the end of the last episode because the autopsy of Jack’s brain showed signs of dementia. But, as the fourth episode kicks off, she learns from her lawyer that her husband’s dementia was not “advanced enough to have affected his capacity.” Her lawyer, who has looked at Sally’s prenup and declared it to be a “car crash,” wants her to join John and Gray’s case, but that’s a hard pass for Sally.

Sally goes to Jack’s office looking for his laptop. Annie, Jack’s assistant, tells her it’s not there. If she had found the laptop, she would have turned it over to the police. But Sally finds Jack’s laptop hidden in a secret compartment of Jack’s desk. “You know Jack, always had to have something to hide,” she tells Annie.

In her interview, Sally says looking at Jack’s laptop was her worst mistake. “I didn’t even work out why he hid it until a few weeks ago,” she says.

Well, I feel a bit silly for just assuming Arnaud was Sally’s secret boyfriend. When the two finally share the screen, it becomes clear that while they have a great deal of affection for each other, they are not romantically involved. Josh, who is supposed to be away at boarding school, makes a surprise visit home and catches Sally and Arnaud in an embrace, Josh assumes the worst (been there Josh) but his mother tells him that Arnaud was not only his father’s business partner but that he “also happens to be gay.”

Arnaud tells Sally he hasn’t seen Jack since Sally told him what she found on Jack’s desk. (We don’t know what she found.)  With access to Jack’s laptop, she can now see Jack’s messages and knows Arnaud lied to her. Jack and Arnaud were texting back and forth just four days before Jack died. “Why would you need to lie to me?” Sally asks him. “I’m not doing this over the phone,” Arnaud tells her.

John Wright: The Second Son

We learn a bit more about John and Georgia’s relationship, mostly that they couldn’t have children, which has put a long-term strain on their marriage. But the real development is that John is sad that Emily is now being cold to him. He thought they were buddies! He just wants to be loved, is that so wrong? “You’re going to overturn the will, and this time next year, you are going to be running this company,”  Emily tells him. Poor John thought Emily was okay with everything. But her tune has definitely changed since Kyle left her.

The last shot of John is of him silently cackling to himself during his interview, which takes place two years after Jack’s death. In the future, John is also much more casually dressed and has a beard.

Georgia Wright: The Second Son's Wife

Georgia is about as delightful as Gray. She accuses her husband of behaving like a love-sick teenager around his niece. The police know she approached Jack when he was walking out of a club about five weeks before his death. She wanted answers from Jack about the will. She answers “no comment” to all of DC Jones’ questions.

Georgia is looking pretty guilty. She got a speeding ticket three miles away from Jack’s estate the night Jack was murdered. That is the night Georgia said she was home all night long. Georgia answers “no comment” to that question as well.

After she is done with the police, she calls her husband, demanding to know what he did to cause the police to question her. “Be careful. Be very, very careful,” she warns him.

Asha Bell: The Missing Suspect

Still missing! And not even mentioned in this week’s episode. But she has to pop up sometime. The series wouldn’t have even mentioned her if Asha wasn’t going to play a role in the series somehow, would they? She's Chekov's Suspect.

I, Jack Wright continues on UKTV in the U.K. with new episodes streaming on Wednesdays, and BritBox in the U.S. with new episodes streaming on Thursdays, through the end of May 2025.
